13 Nov 2013 - Overseas and local experts get together for Viticulture & Oenology Conference

SASEV (South African Society for Enology and Viticulture) will host their annual conference at the Lord Charles Hotel, Somerset West.  This year's conference is to be presented in workshop format.  The conference will be held in conjunction with Winetech and the focus will be on the revised research strategy of Winetech and current research projects within the industry. 

The conference kicks off with an open session, Wednesday, 13 November 2013.  Prof Johann Kirsten, Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development of the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Pretoria will get this session underway.  Kirsten completed his PhD in Agricultural Economics, at the University of Pretoria and in 1992 he started his career as a lecturer at the University. 

During his academic career of over 20 years he has published more than 110 articles as author and / or co-author.  Prof. Kirsten will focus his speech on the National Development Plan and in particular the role of agriculture and the future of agricultural research in South Africa.

Other speakers for the open session - Dr. Dave Block of UC Davis and Mr Gerard Martin, Executive Manager of Winetech.  Dr. Block is the Head of Department for Viticulture and Oenology at the University of California.

Dr. Linda Thompson, Senior Researcher at the University of Melbourne (Australia) is the opening speaker for the second open session, Thursday, November 14, 2013.  She is currently working on the sustainable and economic control of pests in the wine industry, as well as providing information on sensitive chemical control and the prediction of change in pest populations due to climate change. 

Other speakers for the open session are Prof Gerhard Pietersen, Specialist researcher at the ARC-Plant Protection and Professor Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria, as well as Dr Jeanne de Waal, Technical Manager for Dow AgroSciences SA.

A total of six workshops will be offered after the open sessions on Wednesday and Thursday as well as Friday morning.  Two sessions will be offered in parallel.  During the workshops, local researchers will get the opportunity to introduce their latest research to the industry.
