2011 CONFERENCE - 10 & 11 November 2011

The conference will take place in the Protea Hotel, Technopark, Stellenbosch, SOUTH AFRICA

 The Organising Committee of the Conference on Enology and Viticulture invites you to attend this unique opportunity to experience the research and practices applied in the South African Wine Industry.

 Programme

The programme will feature lectures by invited keynote speakers (international and national) in an open session.  The rest of the conference will consist of parallel running workshops with the following topics:

  • Consumer-driven wines through sensory analysis.
  • Different styles of wine.
  • Economic Sustainability.
  • Managing Wine Quality – Practical Hygiene and Logical Quality control.
  • Climate change, water and waste water management and alternative energy.
  • South African Chenin blanc: Diversity Profiles.
  • Vinoflow Max – a new wine filtration enzyme and its benefits and experience in different parts of the world.

Keynote speakers

The following international scientists have already accepted invitations to present keynotes at the SASEV conference:

  •  Dr. Nick Dokoozlian

Dr. Nick Dokoozlian is the Vice President of Viticulture at EJ Gallo.  He is a former viticulturalist in the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California Extension at Davis.  According to Wine Business Monthly, Dr. Dokoozlian is one of the top five viticulturists in the world, and a walking textbook on viticulture.  He is also a former Director of the American Vineyard Foundation.  His areas of research are focused on the physiology of the ripening of grapes.  Dr. Dokoozlian is an expert on the analysis, treatment and management of wineries in warm areas.

  • Patricia Osidacz (Senior Sensory Scientist)

Patricia Osidacz has a Bachelor in Food Engineer and a Masters degree in Food Science from the University of Illinois, plus an Applied Sensory Science and Consumer Testing qualification from UC Davis.  She was part of the Sensory team at E&J Gallo Wines in California and was Consumer and Technical Insights Coordinator at Unilever in Brazil and the UK.  Patricia has been with AWRI since June 2007, coordinating and running a wide range of sensory studies linking wine flavour compounds with sensory quality.  Patricia has taken a lead role in consumer research projects, working to expand the knowledge of consumer behaviour and their likes and dislikes.

  • Paul Kilmartin

Paul Kilmartin obtained his PhD in Chemistry at the University of Auckland, New Zealand and is currently Associate Professor in the Chemistry Department of the Science Faculty at this University.  He is Associate Editor of the Australian Journal of Grape and Wine Research, Editorial Board member for the journal Food Chemistry and member of several scientific Associations.  His main area of research is wine chemistry and he is currently involved in 10 PhD projects.
